A Night at the Proms

The first Proms concert took place on 10 August 1895 and was the brainchild of the impresario Robert Newman. He declared “I am going to run nightly concerts and train the public by easy stages. Popular at first, gradually raising the standard until I have created a public for classical and modern music”. Tickets were affordable and the audience was free to stroll around or promenade while the orchestra was playing.

Fast forward some 127 years and the Proms are coming to Whitehill & Bordon with modern day impresario and Director of The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre, Rob Allerston achieving a long held ambition to bring classical music to Whitehill & Bordon.

A Night at the Proms features a 70-piece orchestra and is a creative partnership between the Alton Concert Orchestra, The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre and Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company. The concerts theme for 2022 is New Beginnings and as with the Last Night of the Proms in the glorious Royal Albert Hall, singing and flag waving will be encouraged as we celebrate music’s ability to bring people together.

So join us on Saturday 9 July 2022 in the fantastic new Town Park adjacent to The Shed in the heart of Whitehill & Bordon, for an open air concert that heralds in new beginnings for all music lovers and for the new town centre.
