Sustainability: Saving Mode Activated.

Each month in 2023 Prince Philip Park will have a featured topic and January’s is Sustainability. Sustainability isn’t always about buying more expensive products or driving an electric car, it’s about creating awareness around how you choose to consume resources. Across Prince Philip Park, caring for our environment is a priority. So far, we’ve installed 1100 solar panels, planted over 9,000 trees and spent £3.4million on green initiatives. The new homes on the development use one third less water than the national average and the carbon footprint is 68% more efficient than traditional homes.

Throughout this blog we’ll be showcasing how local organisations and businesses across Prince Philip Park and wider Whitehill & Bordon are also making an impact with their approach to becoming more sustainable.

Siam Oishi & Too Good To Go

Too Good to go is a nationwide initiative with a mission to make sure good food gets eaten, not wasted. Every day, delicious, fresh food goes to just because it hasn’t sold in time but the Too Good To Go app lets customers buy and collect Magic Bags of this food – at a great price – directly from businesses.

Siam Oishi at The Shed is registered with the app. They regularly offer a ‘Magic Bag’ filled with a delicious Thai or Japanese meals. These can include items such as noodles, sushi, spring rolls or gyoza, depending on what they have on the day. Siam Oishi’s great value, delicious food and friendly staff have been highlighted on the app and they have a rating of 4.6 out of 5!

Other local places who regularly offer Magic Bags are One Stop Bordon, Little Waitrose & Partners at Liphook South and Starbucks at Liphook Services Northbound. Plus, look out for The Pavilion at BOSC who will also be joining the scheme soon.

Whitehill and Bordon Community Polytunnel

Opened in April 2022, the Community Polytunnel is used by youth, community groups and schools in the Whitehill & Bordon area. It is hoped that it will be a horticulture project hub to grow floral displays, plants and food which can be used within the town.

Owned by Whitehill Town Council, funded by East Hampshire District Council and managed by the Whitehill and Bordon Community Trust, the Polytunnel is a community initiative that is already growing fresh vegetables that will be donated to our local foodbank.

Cycle Sphere

If you’re looking for a more sustainable way to travel around town , our local bicycle shop, Cycle Sphere offers a range bicycle workshops, services, courses and coaching.

Situated at The Shed, Cycle Sphere is a one stop shop for all things bikes! Whether you need a new bike, a service or a confidence boosting group ride, their experienced and friendly staff are here to help.

Electric Vehicle Charging Points

Alongside the leisure centre there are six pairs of electric car charging points for use by anyone visiting the Town Centre. A further 17 pairs are planned to be in use in the Town Centre by Easter 2023.

The ‘Pod Point’ EV Chargers have a ‘Universal Type 2’ charging connections available 24 hours a day and costs 40p per KWH used.

Sustrans

Community Engagement Officer, Trish Grant from Sustrans has been working with local businesses and residents to develop activities and resources which build confidence and skills, enabling people travel in a way that protects the environment and boosts mental and physical health.

She has already organised a variety of difference guided walks and activities for local residents including frequent confidence building woodland walks and a walk ‘n’ plant for the food bank.

Whitehill and Bordon Green Loop

We are very lucky in Whitehill and Bordon to be connected by the Green Loop. The network of paths crisscross and encircle Whitehill and Bordon, connecting the new and existing town. It is used regularly by families, walkers, cyclists and runners as it links the town’s greenspaces including Hogmoor Inclosure, Bordon Inclosure and Deadwater Valley Nature Reserve.

Better Points : A to B Actively

In 2021, ‘A to B Actively’ launched in Whitehill & Bordon in partnership with Hampshire County Council.

A to B Actively BetterPoints offers rewards for several active means of travel, including scooting, running and wheelchair use, so can be used by most people in Whitehill and Bordon, with great benefits in terms of health – both physical and mental, reducing traffic and, in turn, carbon emissions. Business Netwalking, Bordon

Local businessman Rob Fryer is leading Business Netwalking in Bordon. It’s another great way to promote your business and consequently grow your network while benefiting from by being outdoors, getting those steps in and simply having a walk and a chat. The next event is 19th January 2023 at Broxhead Common in Bordon departing from the Royal Exchange pub.
